The looks

Subtle, defined or fuller

Most first requests fall into one of three looks. Results vary from person to person, and the provider will explain what is realistic for your lips.

  • Subtle

A small amount of filler for a little more shape and hydration. Many people start here and add later if they want.

  • Defined

Attention on the border and the cupid’s bow, so the outline reads more clearly without much extra volume.

  • Fuller

More volume, usually built up over more than one visit rather than all at once, so the tissue can settle.

The appointment

What a first appointment usually looks like

Every provider works a little differently. A Cleveland Clinic overview gives this general shape.

  1. 1

    A conversation first

The provider asks about your health, allergies and any past filler, and explains what filler can and cannot do for you.

  2. 2

    A plan and a product

You agree on a look and an amount. Ask which FDA-approved product they will use and to see the sealed, labeled syringe.

  3. 3

    Numbing and treatment

Numbing cream takes about 15 to 30 minutes, and many lip products also contain lidocaine. A visit runs 30 minutes to 2 hours.

  4. 4

    Aftercare and follow-up

Swelling and bruising are common for some days. A follow-up is often set about two weeks later.

Who may inject

Who can give lip filler in Texas

Texas Medical Board rules treat the injection of a substance for cosmetic purposes as the practice of medicine (22 TAC 169.25). A physician may inject, or may delegate the work to a trained nurse or physician assistant and supervise it. An esthetician or a “lip artist” without a medical license is not someone this site sends requests to.

So the first question is simple: who will treat me, what license do they hold, and which physician supervises them? You can check a physician’s or physician assistant’s license, education and any disciplinary actions on the Texas Medical Board lookup, and a nurse’s license through the Texas Board of Nursing.

The FDA advises choosing a licensed health care provider with dermatology or plastic surgery experience who is trained in filler injection. The dermal fillers guide covers injector types in more detail.

Products

The lip products the FDA has approved

Lip fillers are medical devices, and the FDA approves each one for named uses. Products approved for lip augmentation in adults include Restylane® Kysse (Galderma, 2020), Juvederm® Volbella® XC (Allergan, 2016) and RHA® 3 (Teoxane, lip indication added 2023). The Juvederm and lip products guide lists them with their approved uses.

Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary: the body breaks them down, so repeat treatments may be needed. Clinical studies submitted to the FDA followed lip patients for about a year. Results vary from person to person.

Worth knowing

The FDA says not to buy filler online, not to inject yourself and not to use needle-free filler pens. No filler is approved for sale over the counter. Juvederm® is a registered trademark of Allergan, Inc., an AbbVie company.

Risks

Risks the FDA describes

The FDA lists bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching and rash as common after filler. Less common are lumps, infection, allergic reaction and tissue damage. Some effects can appear weeks, months or years later.

The most serious risk is filler entering a blood vessel, which can block blood flow and cause tissue death, vision problems or stroke. The FDA says to get care at once for unusual pain, vision changes, white or blue skin near the area, or signs of a stroke. Ask the provider how they lower that risk and whether they keep hyaluronidase, the enzyme used to dissolve hyaluronic acid filler, on hand.

Tell the provider about cold sores, allergies (including to lidocaine), bleeding problems, pregnancy or breastfeeding. FDA-approved filler uses are for adults, and safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not known.

Choosing

How to choose a provider in Houston

Compare more than one provider if you like, and never feel rushed. A good consultation answers these questions plainly.

  1. Who will inject me, what is your license, and who supervises you?
  2. How many lip treatments do you give in a typical month?
  3. Which FDA-approved product will you use, and can I see the sealed syringe?
  4. How much do you suggest for a first treatment, and why?
  5. What will you do if a blood vessel problem happens, and do you keep hyaluronidase here?
  6. How do I reach you after hours if something worries me?

Be wary of anyone who will not name the product, sells filler by the syringe without a consultation, or cannot tell you who the supervising physician is. The cost guide lists more red flags.

Questions

Questions people ask

Who will I talk to?

An independent provider in the Houston area. Lip Filler Houston is a free referral service, not a clinic or med spa: it passes your request on, does not perform treatments and employs no providers. It may receive compensation from participating providers.

Does lip filler hurt?

Providers usually numb the lips with a cream first, and many lip products contain lidocaine to reduce pain. People describe it differently, and the provider can tell you what to expect.

How long does lip filler last?

Hyaluronic acid filler is temporary. In the clinical study for Restylane® Kysse, lip fullness was maintained for 48 weeks after the last injection. How long yours lasts depends on you and the product.

Can lip filler be dissolved?

Hyaluronic acid filler can usually be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. Using it this way is off-label, and it has its own risks, so ask the provider how and when they use it.

Is there a minimum age?

FDA-approved filler uses are for adults, and most lip products are approved for people over 21 or 22, depending on the product.

What is the difference between filler and a lip flip?

Filler adds volume. A lip flip uses a small dose of a neurotoxin at the lip edge so the upper lip turns slightly out, and adds no volume.

Is there a consultation fee?

Providers set their own prices. Ask the provider whether a consultation fee applies before you book.

I live in The Woodlands or Katy. Can I still ask?

Yes. Requests can reach providers across the Houston area. See The Woodlands and Katy and Sugar Land.

This site gives general information, not medical advice. A licensed provider decides with you whether a treatment suits you.
