A lip flip and lip filler are often mentioned in the same breath, but they work in different ways and suit different goals. This guide explains what a lip flip is, what the published sources say about timing and side effects, and what to ask a Houston provider before choosing one, the other or both.

Lip Filler Houston is a free referral service, not a clinic or med spa. A request sent from this page goes to an independent provider in the Houston area, who is responsible for their own care and prices.
What a lip flip is
A lip flip uses a small dose of botulinum toxin, the same family of medicines as BOTOX® Cosmetic (Allergan), injected at the corners of the mouth and along the edge of the upper lip. The toxin relaxes part of the muscle around the mouth, so the upper lip turns slightly upward and shows a little more of its pink part when you rest or smile.
It adds no volume. Nothing is placed inside the lip. That is the main difference from filler, which adds volume with a gel.
A lip flip is an off-label use
The FDA label for BOTOX® Cosmetic covers frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet, forehead lines and the vertical bands of the neck. The lips are not a labeled use. Providers may still offer a lip flip, which is called off-label use. Ask the provider which product they use, why they consider it suitable for you, and what dose they plan.
What happens at a lip flip appointment
A Cleveland Clinic overview describes the treatment as taking about 10 to 20 minutes, typically using about 2 to 4 units in the upper lip and 2 in the lower lip. The provider marks the points, cleans the skin and gives a few small injections. Many people go about their day afterwards, but follow the aftercare your own provider gives.
When it shows and how long it lasts
The Cleveland Clinic says the result shows in about one week and lasts about two to five months. ASPS puts lip flip results at between two and three months. Because the effect wears off, people who like it come back for repeat treatments. Results vary from person to person.
Lip flip and lip filler side by side
| Lip flip | Lip filler | |
|---|---|---|
| What is injected | A neuromodulator (botulinum toxin) | A gel, usually hyaluronic acid |
| Adds volume | No | Yes |
| FDA label for lips | No (off-label) | Yes, for products approved for lip augmentation |
| When it shows | About one week (Cleveland Clinic) | Right away, once swelling settles |
| How long it lasts | About 2 to 5 months (Cleveland Clinic); 2 to 3 months (ASPS) | Clinical studies followed patients for about a year |
| Can it be reversed | No; it wears off | HA filler can usually be dissolved |
Some people choose a lip flip because they want a small change at the border without added fullness. Others want volume, which only filler gives. Some ask about both in one plan. The dermal fillers guide explains how filler works, and the Juvederm and lip products guide lists the fillers approved for the lips.
Side effects and risks
ASPS notes a lip flip can cause some weakness around the mouth, for example when smiling or drinking through a straw. The Cleveland Clinic lists drooling, trouble drinking or speaking if the injection is too close to the mouth, and headache. A lip flip is not recommended during pregnancy.
Because the effect is a muscle change, it cannot be dissolved the way hyaluronic acid filler can. If something feels wrong, it wears off with time. That is one more reason to start with a careful, small dose from someone who does this often.
Tell the provider
Mention any neuromuscular condition, medicines you take, past reactions to neuromodulators, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Only a licensed provider who examines you can say whether a lip flip suits you.
Who may give a lip flip in Texas
Texas Medical Board rules (22 TAC 169.25) treat the injection of medication or substances for cosmetic purposes as the practice of medicine. A physician may inject, or delegate the injection to a qualified nurse or physician assistant and supervise it. Before booking, ask who will inject you and who supervises them, then check the license on the Texas Medical Board lookup or the Texas Board of Nursing.

What a lip flip costs
ASPS does not publish a lip flip fee. The closest national figure is for all neuromodulator injections: a 2023 national average surgeon/physician fee of $435, according to ASPS’s 2023 statistics. That covers many kinds of neuromodulator treatment, not only lips, and it is not a Houston price. Providers set their own prices; the lip filler cost guide explains what to ask for in a quote.
Questions to ask before a lip flip
- Do you think a lip flip, filler or both suits my goal, and why?
- Which product and how many units do you plan to use?
- Who will inject me, and who is the supervising physician?
- What side effects should I expect, and how long might weakness last?
- When should I come back if I want to repeat it?
Lip flips are asked about across the area, from the Galleria and Montrose to Katy and The Woodlands. A request sent from this page goes to an independent provider who can answer these questions for you.
Questions people ask
Is a lip flip the same as lip filler?
No. A lip flip uses a neuromodulator to relax the muscle so the upper lip turns slightly out. Filler adds volume with a gel. See dermal fillers.
How long does a lip flip last?
The Cleveland Clinic says about two to five months; ASPS says between two and three months. Results vary.
Is a lip flip FDA-approved?
The lips are not a labeled use of BOTOX® Cosmetic. A lip flip is an off-label use, so ask the provider why they consider it suitable for you.
Can I have a lip flip and filler together?
Some people ask about both in one plan. Only the provider who examines you can say whether that suits you and in what order.
Will a lip flip affect drinking or talking?
It can cause some weakness around the mouth, for example with a straw, and trouble drinking or speaking if injected too close to the mouth. Ask how the provider places it.
